What is DP?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students,aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond.It is a globally-acknowledged leading programme,which has been devoted to the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students.The DP has gained recognition and respect from the leading universities in more than 140 countries and regions,and its graduates win the favor of the world's top universities including Harvard University,Yale University,University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.

Our advantages

1. Balance sciences with humanities and promote all-round development.

DP students are required to learn two modern languages,one humanity or social science subject,one experimental science subject,maths and one creative art subject.These six subjects are a well balanced integration of sciences and humanities.

2. Respect individuality and flexibility

Among the six subjects, three subjects are taken at higher level (HL) and the other three are taken at standard level (SL).Subjects at HL are studied in greater depth and breadth. Students can select their subjects flexibly based on their abilities, personal interests and future university majors so that their strengths can be promoted and weaknesses avoided.

3. Practice inquiry-based learning and train problem-solving skills

The DP emphasizes the ability of critical thinking and inquiry by encouraging every student to interpret the world from multiple perspectives. Its three core elements are theory of knowledge (TOK), extended essay (EE), and creativity, activity and service (CAS). These core elements can train students’ abilities in critical thinking, academic research and writing, and organizational and communicative skills.

Furthermore, these courses can help students to form an in-depth and independent understanding of academic studies and the world so that they can proceed seamlessly to higher education overseas.

4. Implement holistic, standardized and rigorous assessment

The holistic and rigorous assessment values the learning process.It not only examines the learning achievement through external assessment but also comprehensively checks students’abilities in learning and applying the acquired knowledge through internal assessment in the hope to train students' all-round qualities.

Our journey

GCGS was authorized to implement the DP in 2001. Up to now, it has had approximately 750 excellent graduates. Thanks to its rich experience and outstanding teachers, GCGS takes the pride that its DP students have been making increasingly remarkable achievements in the global DP exam. The average points, the excellent rate and the number of full-mark students have been growing year by year. In the 2015 DP exam, two students (Pakman Tsoi and Jiho Oh) earned a full mark in the total score (45).

Worldwide, only 160 students have achieved full marks. Because of this, GCGS received a letter of congratulations from IB Director Dr. Siva Kumari. Our DP graduates have been represented by the world’s top 50 universities in different countries. In the 2015 university admissions, 14 DP students received scholarships from the following six universities: The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University of British Columbia, Florida Institute of Technology, and Miami University. The accumulated amount of scholarship was as high as 1, 495, 165 RMB.
